Boxes are stacked one on top of another all over the attic. She hasn’t been up here since the last Christmas she spent at home. Visiting her family on Christmas vacation from Yale has been tough to take with all of her studies and tests. The flashlight leads the way into the dark room, revealing spider webs and dust. Exposing the past using the light, she searches for a box labeled “Christmas.” Her shaking hands move a few boxes with labels that say “Baby Clothes” and “1992.” The Christmas box finally jumped out to be seen in the back corner near a torn apart spider web. Attempting to reach it, she crawls farther into the attic. Her knee taps against something cold causing it to roll away. Arched back and knees apart, she tries to look underneath herself to find what she touched. When she shines her tool around the room something shines rights back at her. It looks like it’s very fragile, seems to be an antique. Tilting her head to the side, she tries to figure out what is leaning against the old piano. It’s small enough to be cradled in the palm of her hand.
Air escaped past her lips, sweeping dust off of the little object. The shape is a heart but one of the top curves is bent in. Cursive lines are decorating the back and make the letters “C” “R” with curves and elegance. There was one diamond in the middle of the pendant, and a latch on the side. Her hesitant fingers opened what she know realized is a locket. A heart cut out of a small picture was placed inside in black and white. It was of a tall, young man whose arms were wrapped around a woman who looked about my age with curly hair. They were standing in front of a carousel with smiles that showed how much fun they were having. Trying to think about whose name begins with “C” and “R,” she stared into the photo for inspiration. “C” is for Charlotte, “R” is for Robert. Those were her grandparent’s first names. She carefully placed the locket in her pant pocket and crawled out of the attic with questions running around her head.
